1. Can you tell us a bit about Solvd. and how it fits into the Transport UK group? Do you work on any transport projects?

Solvd. is a business process outsourcing company that provides services such as payroll, HR, finance, and customer experience. We support the operating companies within the Transport UK group by delivering essential back-office functions like payroll and finance processing, as well as customer support services.

Within my team, we also provide business travel support for colleagues across Transport UK, particularly for those working in rail replacement, who are based all over the UK. I also support internal communications and have improved story telling through graphic design on Transport UK’s website. While I’m not directly involved in frontline transport projects, my role helps ensure the operational and support functions behind them run smoothly.

2. Can you describe your main responsibilities as Business Support and Marketing Manager?

In my role as Business Support and Marketing Manager, my responsibilities are quite diverse. I oversee branding and marketing materials, manage internal communication channels such as newsletters, email updates, and our intranet, and I also lead on event management, from office engagement activities to our annual summer events. Alongside that, I’m responsible for our website and social media presence. On the business support side, I oversee functions like business travel and general office management, ensuring smooth day-to-day operations across the company.

3. Can you tell us about your journey to this role?

I’ve always been drawn to communications because I enjoy storytelling and creating engaging content. At school, English and business management were my favourite subjects, which naturally led me towards studying marketing. My first marketing role came while I was still a student, working at Optical Express, where I gained hands-on experience in a fast-paced environment. From there, I built my career across both marketing and operational roles, including time in shipping and the fire protection sector, which gave me a real appreciation of how different industries operate. When I joined Solvd., I was able to bring together these varied experiences and develop my skills further.

4. Can you share a piece of advice or a lesson you learned you carry with you in your career?

One lesson I carry with me is to appreciate everyone’s role in a project, no matter how big or small. A former marketing director once shared with me the story of the NASA janitor who, when asked by President Kennedy what he was doing, replied: “I’m helping put a man on the moon.” Whether or not the story is true, the message has stuck with me. Every role contributes to the bigger picture, whether it’s frontline colleagues, finance teams, or those of us in support functions. Keeping that perspective helps me value teamwork and see the purpose behind the work we do.

5. What do you enjoy most about your role?

I know this is a bit of a cliche answer but what I enjoy most is the variety. No two days are the same. I get to combine creative work, like communications and events, with the organisational side of business support, which keeps things interesting. I also really value the people aspect of my role, whether that’s helping colleagues stay connected through communications or supporting them with the practicalities of business travel and office needs. It’s rewarding to make people’s day’s that bit easier through what we do behind the scenes .

6. How do you balance the “business support” and “marketing” sides of your work?

It can definitely be a challenge at times, but strong organisation and clear prioritisation make it manageable. I’ve also found that the two sides complement each other. An understanding of business processes and strategy helps me deliver more effective communications and marketing campaigns. So, while it requires focus to balance, they really do go hand-in-hand.

7. What marketing or engagement initiatives are you most proud of?

A few stand out. I was proud to support the press rollout for our first non-transport client, St Mirren Football Club, which was exciting to see picked up locally in Scotland. I also really enjoyed creating our brand and recruitment videos in collaboration with a creative agency. It was rewarding to see our brand come to life in a fresh way. On the engagement side, I love organising team events, from our full-team briefings to the Christmas party. They take a lot of planning, but it’s wonderful to see colleagues come together, enjoy themselves, and feel connected.

8. How would you describe the culture at Solvd to someone thinking of joining the team?

Solvd. has a very people-focused culture. There’s a real sense of community, and well-being and development are genuinely prioritised. Since joining in early 2023, I’ve had opportunities to grow both my existing skills and new ones, all within a supportive and collaborative environment. It’s a place where you feel empowered to take on challenges and expand your career, knowing you’re surrounded by colleagues who want you to succeed.

9. Where do you draw your creativity and design ideas from?

I find that focus is key. I like setting aside time to really shut out distractions and think creatively. I also take inspiration from other creatives, particularly female-led communities. One I follow closely is Pretty Little Marketer, founded by Sophie Miller, which shares brilliant insights, campaigns, and resources, especially for the B2B space. Since so much marketing inspiration tends to focus on consumer brands, I find resources like this invaluable for sparking fresh ideas that work in a business-to-business environment like Solvd. and Transport UK.

Spotlight Series: Katie Kinloch

Spotlight Series: Meet Lhabib Banni

For our latest Spotlight feature, we spoke with Lhabib Banni, a Customer

You’ve become something of a legend at St Pancras International, with customers regularly writing in to praise you. What motivates you to go above and beyond every day?

I’ve been with East Midlands Railway (EMR) for 16 years, and what keeps me going is simple: I genuinely love helping people. My role is to answer questions and assist customers, but for me, it goes beyond that. Travel can be stressful: flights get delayed, people arrive late, and unexpected things happen. If I can make someone's day a little easier, whether it’s helping with their luggage, guiding them when they’re in a rush, or just being a friendly face, that’s what makes it all worth it. I love my job, and I take pride in making a difference, even in small ways.

Tell us about the path that led you to this role.

I started my journey at St Pancras International station as a cleaner, and from there I applied to work with EMR. I worked hard, had great support from management, and eventually moved into my current role as a Customer Welcome Host. It’s been an amazing journey, and I’m proud of how far I’ve come.

I’m originally from Agadir, Morocco, and I also spent eight years living in Portugal.

What do you enjoy most about being a Customer Welcome Host?

What drives me is making people feel welcome. I come in smiling every day because I genuinely enjoy my job and the people I meet. In 16 years of working here, I’ve never had a problem with anyone. I treat everyone with respect, and I believe that kindness goes a long way, especially in tough situations.

Sometimes, customers are stressed or upset. Maybe they’ve lost a ticket or they’ve missed a train, and even if I can’t always fix the problem, I do everything I can to support them. I work closely with my manager to make sure we provide the best service possible, even when things don’t go to plan.

I want people to know that Lhabib is here for them at St Pancras, working hard and always ready to help with a smile.

You were once recognised for record ticket scans across the network. A moment that clearly meant a lot to you. Can you tell us what that recognition meant personally and professionally?

That award meant so much to me, both personally and professionally. It was during a very difficult time, around 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Back then, many people were hesitant to check tickets on the train because of the risk, and for a while, almost no one was doing it. But I believed it was still important to do my job and support the service as best I could. So, I put on my mask, gloves, and full protective gear, and continued checking and scanning tickets. I stayed consistent, even when it was tough or felt risky. In 2022, my efforts were recognised across the whole network. I was told I had the highest number of ticket scans, and I was presented with a special award. I’ll never forget the moment it was handed to me. It felt like more than just a prize. It was a visible reminder that dedication and consistency, even in hard times, do get noticed. Sharing that award with my wife made it even more meaningful, because it felt like the achievement was something we could both enjoy.

What’s your approach to creating such memorable customer experiences? Is there a particular moment with a customer that stands out to you?

For me, it's simple: this is my job, and I take it seriously. My approach is to stay calm, listen, and treat everyone with respect, even in difficult situations. Not every situation is easy. Sometimes, people come to the gate stressed, upset, or even angry. But most customers are wonderful. I’ve had many great experiences. In the winter, sometimes we’re out on the platform in the freezing cold, wearing three pairs of socks, scarves, gloves, and jackets. Sometimes customers show up with hot coffee for us, just to say thank you. Those little moments mean so much. They remind me why I love my job. A smile, a kind word, or a small gesture can make someone’s day, and mine too.

That’s what it's all about: staying kind, staying calm, and always doing your best.

How would you describe the culture at EMR, especially when it comes to customer service?

We support each other, we work as a team, and we’re all keen to help, both our colleagues and our customers. Everyone is friendly, and there’s a real positive energy. I’m always happy to come to work, give it my best, and then go home and relax, knowing I’ve helped people. Sometimes, if we’re short-staffed, I’ll come in as early as 4 am. I’m always ready to step up when needed. I genuinely care about the team and the customers. That’s just the culture here: we look after each other, and we go the extra mile.

Spotlight Series: Meet Lhabib Banni

Transport UK Group Launches New Sustainability Strategy

<figure class="

23 July 2025, London - Transport UK Group (TUK) has today launched its new company-wide sustainability strategy, marking a major step forward in its mission to shape the future of low-carbon, integrated transport.

As one of the country’s leading public transport operator owning groups, TUK is committed to delivering greener, more efficient travel through innovation, investment and long-term planning.
Transport UK has been proud to partner with the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award for three years now. In the past year alone, we have sponsored 473 young people across the UK to access the award, build skills, and prepare for future work. This includes 140 marginalised young people who got a Resilience Grant to help them overcome barriers and take part. This amounts to £4,400 worth of social value per person through better wellbeing and stronger community connections. We’re excited to keep this going!

I have also personally volunteered as an expedition leader at a local Hampshire school for three years. I spend about 10 days a year guiding students through their Bronze and Silver expeditions, teaching navigation in the day and night and developing their teamwork. Thanks to the DofE, I’m trained in first aid and mountain leadership, which is a fun change from my usual day-to-day work at Transport UK and reminds me of my Boy Scout days.

The last two years as Transport UK’s representative has included me visiting Buckingham Palace. Meeting Gold Award winners and DofE Ambassadors always inspires me to keep supporting the programme. Volunteering with DofE is incredibly rewarding, as it’s a chance to give back, boost young people’s confidence, and celebrate their achievements.

How did you begin your career in rail?

I come from a ‘rail’ family. My dad has worked in the industry for 35 years. I remember being 13 years old and accompanying him to work in Liverpool, where he was a station manager. I just thought it was the coolest thing ever! After my 18th birthday, I got a job as a station assistant at Moorfields underground station, and this was the start of my railway journey.

You transitioned from customer-facing roles to legal and compliance roles. What drove this shift, and how has your front-line experience shaped your current work?

My career got off to a fast start. I went from station assistant to station retailer and then to step up assistant manager at Liverpool Central in a short time. After a great couple of years, I decided to pause my station-based career and learn more about the wider business, so I sidestepped into Merseyrail's headquarters on a six-month secondment. My role was six months of scanning cupboards full of paper contracts into digital versions, but I made sure to be the best paper scanner the business had seen! I then continued progressing within Merseyrail HQ over the next 8 years or so to the position of Data Protection Manager. I played a key role in shaping TUK's data protection compliance framework, which ultimately led me to support TUK as a group Data Protection Manager. Merseyrail funded my data protection and compliance qualifications during my 12 years there. I’m grateful to have met some amazing people throughout my career who believed in my potential and pushed me to step outside my comfort zone and grow professionally and personally.

There are a ton of similarities across different roles within rail, whether that be customer-facing roles or legal/compliance work. Working hard, tackling challenges head-on, and leaning on others for support has helped - diamonds really are made under pressure. In the railway industry, everyone is part of a big family, so make the most of it. It’s a great workplace, and you can be as successful as you push yourself to be.

You’re currently on a 12-month secondment with Transport UK Group within the Business Development/Bid team. What does your new role involve, and what are you most excited about? Have you been enjoying the change?

I currently work as a Bid Manager for TUK. My role as Bid Manager is to help design, coordinate and deliver a winning bid for TUK. The bidding world is completely new to me, so it can be intense and quite challenging. However, it’s different, and I am enjoying the change. I’m surrounded by ambitious, like-minded, people. The office has a great atmosphere and a thriving bid team, so I’m grateful for the opportunity and excited to see what we can achieve together.

What has been your biggest challenge in preparing for a bid so far?

I have only been here a short time, but you need to be permanently switched on. If you switch off for a second, then you will miss something. Bid periods are short, so I tell myself every day to be relentless in what I need to do for the team. It is intense, but ultimately, you need to help the team to be a fast-paced, well-oiled machine. I pride myself on only having to be shown something once, but I’ve learnt that if you are unsure, just reach out.

What achievement are you most proud of over your 12 years in the rail industry, and how did your drive to succeed contribute to it?

I’ve really excelled in the past couple of years, but enrolling on a 9-month leadership course with Merseyrail was a particular highlight. The course was designed to shape the future leaders of the business, and I was proud to receive the Dale Carnegie Leadership Award, recognised as the individual who demonstrated the most significant personal and professional growth over the course of the training. It meant a lot to me.

What advice would you give your younger self from what you’ve learned working in the railways?

I’d tell my younger self to relax and slow down. Don’t feel pressured to achieve everything by a certain age. I was so hard on myself to hit certain goals before turning 30, but since I turned 30 in January this year, I realise I still have such a long way to go. I’m not even halfway through my career! I’ve learned that if you work hard and stay patient, opportunities will come thick and fast.

What do you like most about working in the rail industry?

I really appreciate the family-like environment. Everyone is working hard and is in it together. It’s great to be surrounded by people from different backgrounds with unique experiences. The industry is also full of opportunities, so you can constantly learn, grow, and try your hand at many different things.

What excites you about the future of the rail industry?

The rail and bus industry is experiencing one of the biggest periods of change in the last twenty years. I have told anyone who will listen that this is a time of excitement and opportunity, not a time of worry. TUK have a huge role to play in shaping the public transport industry both in the UK and internationally. This feels like a new age for transport and it’s so cool to be a part of it.

What has been the biggest change from working at a Train Operating Company (TOC) level to TUK?

Working at TUK has pushed me out of my comfort zone in the best way. It’s fast-paced with many new challenges and responsibilities. Learning about the bus industry has been fascinating. The change of scenery from 12 years in Liverpool to working in Central London has been a great experience. I did feel a bit of imposter syndrome at first, but it’s completely normal and the support has been great. It was a great career move and has made me more motivated than ever to succeed.

Spotlight Series: Meet Joe Williams

Spotlight Series: Meet Hannah Cotton-Diederich

For our latest Spotlight piece, we interviewed Hannah Cotton-Diederich,

Tell us about your journey. What inspired you to pursue a career in accessibility and inclusion?

I started working in accessibility and inclusion with the local authority services for vulnerable adults. I often felt that more could be done - more empathy, more effort, and more accountability, which lit a fire in me to use my voice to push for change.

After taking a 14-month career break after having my daughter, I spent eight years at East Midlands Railway before moving across to West Midlands Trains. I have a chronic health condition, so I understand firsthand the barriers that can exist when trying to access public transport. I also see how much of a difference we can make when we listen, adapt, and design with inclusion in mind.

The powerful link between disability, mobility, public transport, and social inclusion has become a deeply personal driver for me. There’s been real progress in the railway industry since I started, but we must always push for more – and I enjoy that I’m empowered to deliver that at WMT. We listen to feedback, involve those with lived experience, and encourage staff at every level to be part of creating a more inclusive railway

What would you like to see more of in the rail industry regarding accessibility?

We’re often limited by Victorian-era infrastructure, and unfortunately, there’s not always enough funding to address everything at once. But what we can change, and what we must change, is the industry’s mindset. We need a more positive, proactive approach to disability and accessibility. Cultural change to accessibility is vital. Education and knowledge on language, empathy, procedures and policy is fundamental to all operators. Accessibility isn’t just about ramps and lifts; it’s about understanding people’s needs and empowering staff to meet them.

What challenges have you faced in advocating for both disability and LGBTQ+ rights, and how have you overcome them?

When I advocated for the installation of a Changing Places toilet (specialised, larger accessible facilities designed for people with significant disabilities and their caregivers), some people raised concerns about antisocial behaviour. I was part of the public consultation and had to balance the need for safety with the clear social value it would bring. Sometimes the risk of implementing a solution can feel greater than doing nothing, but that does not mean we should not push for it.

Another challenge came during engineering works. Making temporary arrangements accessible is not always easy, and pulling together a wide range of voices and lived experiences for an Equality Impact Assessment can be complex. But those voices matter. They are fundamental to ensuring replacement services and plans are accessible. That’s why it’s so encouraging to see WMT taking accessibility and inclusion seriously, fostering a workplace culture where staff are equipped and motivated to provide support to all passengers.

What are some common misconceptions organisations have about accessibility and inclusion?

People are often scared to say the wrong thing, so they avoid the topic altogether. But silence does not help. We need to create environments where people feel comfortable learning and asking questions. Education helps build empathy, and empathy drives change. Companies should empower staff to be confident, compassionate, and proactive. I’m proud that WMT is actively encouraging this mindset among their staff. Initiatives like Network Rail’s Access for All scheme are a step in the right direction, but investment in accessibility is needed to drive change and improvements.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about joining the rail industry? And what would you say to women in particular?

When I first joined the industry, I found community in Women in Rail. I’d tell anyone, especially women, not to be put off by the perception that the railway is a man’s world. We each bring different perspectives, goals, and strengths. Find a mentor or an ally, someone you can talk to when things feel tough. Build your support network, stay open to new opportunities, and have important conversations. Most of all, do not worry about what anyone else thinks. Do what’s right for you.

What recent programmes or projects are you most proud of at West MidlandsTrains?

A project I’m really proud of is the introduction of assistance cards for customers with communication needs. These cards give customers a simple way to ask for help and prompt staff to provide the right support. It’s such a low-cost solution, but it’s had a huge impact.

WMT also recently introduced new Class 730 trains as part of its £1bn investment programme, bringing significant improvements in accessibility. These include more open space throughout the trains, with open gangways making them feel more spacious. There are designated areas for both wheelchairs and bikes, with clear separation to ensure bikes don’t block the wheelchair spaces. At least one accessible toilet is available on every train, and the customer information screens are larger and display more detailed, useful information. These changes make a big difference for all passengers, especially those with accessibility needs.

Spotlight Series: Meet Hannah Cotton-Diederich

Spotlight Series: Meet Gareth Wilcox

For this month’s Spotlight interview, we interviewed Gareth Wilcox, a Depot

Can you tell us about your background? Have you always wanted to work in the transport industry?

I've been in the rail industry for 11 years now. I started working for a railway locomotive manufacturer, Wabtec, in Loughborough as a manager in the fabrication department. I then moved into production and spent 8 years as Head of Production before transferring to LH Electrical in Burton, which was also owned by Wabtec, as Head of Production for a year.

At that point, I was looking for a new challenge, and I was offered a Production Manager role at EMR. I’ve been with EMR for 14 months and have recently been seconded into the Depot Manager role at Etches Park in Derby. I have never worked in a depot, where all the trains are maintained, so it was a significant shift. I found it fascinating working with customers and gaining a better understanding of how the networks function. It's been an exciting journey so far, and I'm studying for this role to deepen my knowledge of policies, procedures, and safety, which are new areas for me.

Working in a train company has been a rewarding experience. The rail industry, and EMR specifically, has opened many opportunities for personal development. EMR is currently supporting me in studying for a degree in Management and Leadership, which has been a fantastic opportunity. I also work closely with the Learning and Development team and mentor apprentices.

Can you describe a day in your role at EMR? What are some of your typical tasks and responsibilities?

As Depot Manager, I oversee operations, maintenance, and production. My days are pretty varied, with multiple shifts and handovers. In the mornings, I have meetings with the Production Manager to review our plans for the day. From there, I focus on site services and operations, as well as the strategic side of things, ensuring everything runs smoothly.

A big part of my job is reviewing fleet control diagrams and ensuring we meet day-to-day delivery and overnight operations targets. Our main goal is to deliver the best possible services for customers. This also involves working closely with the cleaning company to manage cleaning and fuelling, ensuring the trains are clean, tidy, and presentable.

It’s a busy role, but I enjoy it because it keeps me engaged in different aspects of the business.

What aspects of your job do you enjoy the most?

I really enjoy the people development side of my role. I put a lot of effort into helping individuals improve and grow, whether it’s getting people onto engineering degrees or apprenticeships, or just recognising and nurturing talent within my team.

The excellent train services we deliver wouldn’t happen without my team, so I’m always focused on supporting and helping them develop in their roles. I also take pride in providing a clean, well-maintained service for customers. I want the EMR regional fleet to be a leader among train operating companies, and I work hard to ensure we’re meeting those standards.

You recently won an EMR Excellence Award for focusing on health and well-being at depots. Congratulations! Can you tell us about your work and why these matter to you?

Health and well-being are crucial. Our staff are our number one asset; without their well-being, we wouldn’t have a productive workforce. A big part of my focus has been on fatalities, which, unfortunately, can happen on the railway. Etches Park has a new facility where trains come in after any railway incidents to be cleaned and processed. Part of my role has been improving this process.

Exposure to these traumatic events can be difficult for staff, and previously, aftercare wasn’t a major priority. I worked with operational teams to rewrite the process to make it more efficient and to ensure the staff who process these trains have the support they need afterwards.

We now have a much better system in place, and staff are much more aware of the mental health resources available. It’s been a huge improvement, and I’m really proud of our progress.

What qualities are important for thriving in the rail industry?

I’ve enjoyed my time in the rail industry, and I think the opportunities are limitless if you’re driven and motivated. However, it’s not without its challenges—personally and professionally. The rail industry is constantly evolving, and you’ll face logistical and engineering challenges along the way.

To succeed, you need to be adaptable, proactive, and prepared for these challenges. For those considering a career in this industry, I would say, be ready to think on your feet and come up with creative solutions to problems.

Can you share a piece of advice or a lesson you learned that you carry with you in your career?

One piece of advice I’ve always carried came from a former mentor. They told me, “Go, look, see. Don’t just sit in your office and expect things to happen—get involved and understand the issues.” This advice has stuck with me throughout my career. As a leader, being visible and engaged with your team is essential.

Another key lesson is to challenge the norm constantly. Just because something works doesn’t mean it’s the best way. Always ask "why" and look for better solutions. The transport industry is constantly innovating, and so many great ideas exist. We must embrace and take them on board to ensure we evolve with the times.

Spotlight Series: Meet Gareth Wilcox

Spotlight Series: Meet Valerie Mitchell

For our latest Spotlight feature, we interviewed Valerie Mitchell, the

Can you tell us about your journey and background?

Growing up, I loved sports and being active, so I began my professional career as a PE teacher after university. I then wanted a new challenge, so I moved into project management. I stayed in the sports sector, joining sportscotland, where I worked on a program called Active Schools, which encouraged primary school students to stay active. This program was rolled out across Scotland, and it was my first real experience in project management.

In 2014, I joined the Glasgow Commonwealth Games as Head of the Workforce, recruiting 15,000 volunteers, which was the biggest peacetime recruitment drive Scotland had ever undertaken. After the completion of the Games, I moved into a social enterprise, where I worked as the Operations Director, managing large teams dedicated to transforming lives and lifting people out of poverty by supporting people in prison, those who were unemployed and also people impacted by fuel poverty.

Five years ago, I joined Solvd. Today, I lead a team of 150 staff, providing Payroll Services, Finance Services, Customer Experience, Business Support and Business Analysis across train and bus companies in the UK.

You have previously worked on the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games? Can you tell us a bit about that and what your role was?

Yes, I was part of the core team for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, and it was an incredible experience. I joined as one of the first 13 members of staff 5 years out from the Games. I oversaw a workforce of 2,500 people and managed key operational programs like volunteer recruitment, uniforms, training and workforce management.

The scale of the event and the logistics involved were massive, and it was an opportunity to hone my skills in managing large teams and budgets and coordinating across various service areas. It’s one of the highlights of my career.

Can you tell us a bit about Solvd. and how it fits into the Transport UK group? Do you work on any transport projects?

Solvd. is a solutions provider offering a wide range of services, including Payroll, Finance, Customer Experience, Business Support, and Business Analysis. While we have a strong foundation in the transport industry, serving a variety of companies within Transport UK Group, we are actively expanding and winning opportunities beyond the sector. For example, we recently secured a contract to manage services for St. Mirren Football Club. Our team handles payroll for around 20,000 people monthly, manages pension administration, and responds to thousands of inquiries.

What do you find most rewarding about leading the team at Solvd.?

It is rewarding to hear feedback from employees that they truly enjoy their work. Creating a positive, supportive culture where people want to come to work every day is incredibly fulfilling. I’m proud of the work we’ve done in making Solvd. a place where people feel engaged, valued, and part of a larger mission.

What have been some of the most valuable lessons you’ve learned throughout your career, and how have they influenced your approach to leading Solvd.?

I’ve learned that leadership is about being willing to make tough decisions, even when they aren’t popular. It’s also crucial to have an engaged workforce, so I ensure open communication at all levels. I also meet with every new employee within their first month to ensure they feel welcome.

As a leader, I’ve also learnt it is important to have a clear vision of where I want to take the company and keep that focus on both delivering excellent services and taking care of the people who work for me.

What is the highlight of your career at Solvd.?

One of the biggest highlights for me was when Solvd. achieved the Investors in People Platinum award in 2023. Very few companies receive the Platinum award first time around. Our focus on people, engagement, and creating a positive work environment paid off, and it was a proud moment for the entire team.

What is the best piece of advice you have been given?

I was once given advice that it is okay to make mistakes as long as you learn from them, and I think that’s important. As a leader, you must allow your team to do their job, and if they make mistakes, allow them to learn and grow from them!

Do you have any advice for women early on in their careers?

For young women starting their careers, remember that your first choice isn’t always your final career choice. On a personal level, remember that you can absolutely have it all—it’s just important to find the right balance to avoid burning out! I completed my MBA while working full-time at Solvd. and being a single mum. It is possible to juggle your career and personal life with the right support system. Build that support network, rely on your friends and family, and always aim for balance.

Spotlight Series: Meet Valerie Mitchell

Transport UK in Paris for UNESCO's World Engineering Day Launch

Merseyrail’s Greg Suligowski recounts his experience of representing

On March 3rd, I had the privilege of attending UNESCO’s World Engineering Day in Paris on behalf of Transport UK. The theme, Unleashing the Power of Engineers to Advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), highlighted the important role of science and engineering in sustainable development. It was a great opportunity for insightful discussions and to showcase the important role Transport UK is playing in advancing sustainability via our innovative and industry-leading transport solutions in Britain.

The event started with discussions on how innovative engineering can drive real change for the SDGs. A key theme throughout was the importance of embedding sustainability at the core of today's decisions, ensuring they lead to practical, long-term solutions for years to come.

Another key takeaway was the discussion of the importance of engineers at all levels and in all industries engaging with policymakers, ensuring that informed, sustainable choices are made regarding future investment and technology development. The discussions also talked about emerging technologies and AI, which provided valuable insights into how engineering is pushing boundaries while exploring the positive impacts and potential challenges of these technologies from an engineering perspective.

As I met people from different industries and from all over the world, it reaffirmed the critical role transport plays in the global push for sustainability. Transport UK is rolling out innovative, sustainable solutions across its network to reduce emissions, enhance community safety, and support the UN’s SDG #11: building safer, more sustainable cities.

We introduced battery-operated trains in Liverpool, and Greater Anglia is currently exploring how hydrogen-powered trains could be introduced to the UK rail network. In London, all TUK bus depots are now fully equipped with charging stations to power its fleet of electric buses, and discussions are underway on how these charging facilities can be used to power blue light services across the city.

The event celebrated the talent and dedication of engineers worldwide. It was inspiring to see how Transport UK is part of a global conversation on sustainability and how we are all working towards building a brighter future.

Transport UK has been selected as an official partner for UNESCO World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development (WED) 2025. The day recognises the role of science and engineering in the sustainable development.

Marking the 80th anniversary of WED, Transport UK will be featured in a year-long campaign that is premiering today at UNESCO’s headquarters in Paris, France.

To mark the partnership, a film has been produced that illustrates Transport UK’s innovative sustainable transport solutions along its network that reduce emissions and improve community safety. It also recognises the engineers, drivers, and experts who manage the train and bus networks. To date, Transport UK has invested £10 million in green technology across Merseyrail, Greater Anglia, East Midlands Railways, West Midlands Trains and Transport UK London Bus.

The Transport UK film explains how the company is helping to address the UN’s Sustainability Development Goal (SDG) 11 - “Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.” Transport UK is featured alongside 50 other organisations.

The feature starts in Liverpool, a city at the heart of the rail revolution. In 1904, it unveiled one of the world’s first electric railways and is now home to the UK’s first battery powered electric trains: Mersey Travel’s new 777 fleet.

Transport UK is committed to making the railway more accessible. Merseyrail driver Lisa Mooney notes in the film that the new fleet has also taken “design aspects from what the passengers wanted [and] what worked for our network” to become “a pioneer” in boarding accessibility. The 777 fleet is fitted with new sliding step technology which has made Merseyrail one of the most accessible networks in the UK.

The film also showcases Transport UK’s Greater Anglia service, which has partnered with Eversholt Rail and Arup to explore how hydrogen powered trains could be introduced to the UK rail network. Complementing Transport UK’s existing sustainable rail solutions this innovative technology would tap into renewable energy sources across the region.

Alan Pilbeam, Chief Commercial Officer at Transport UK, said:

“Transport UK is punching well above its weight when it comes to improving passenger access to sustainable transport across the UK. Driving innovation with Greater Anglia (GA), we have introduced an entirely new fleet of bi-modal trains that are energy efficient. We’re also installing bi-modal trains in the near future onto East Midlands Railway (EMR).”

The film also highlights the recent success of Transport UK London Bus, which represents 11 percent of the capital’s bus routes. Not only does Transport UK run one of the largest electric and hybrid fleets in the region, but the franchise is on schedule to be fully electrified well before the Mayor of London’s net-zero carbon deadline of 2030.

All of Transport UK’s bus depots are now fully equipped with charging stations to power its fleet of electric buses. Transport UK is also in discussion with local authorities regarding how its charging facilities across London can be used to power blue light services across the city.

Sustainability remains a key pillar of Transport UK’s social values charter. The group is committed to reducing emissions whilst improving air quality, connectivity, and accessibility for the communities it serves as it explores innovations in sustainable travel. It continues to expand its electrified fleets and sustainability initiatives across its train operating companies and London Bus.

The film, created for the 80th anniversary of World Engineering Day, has been produced by St James House, in partnership with Transport UK.

Could you tell us about your journey to become a Senior Commercial Manager, and about what your job entails?

I grew up in Texas, US. Just after my 18th birthday, I joined the United States Air Force as an apprentice electrical engineer. I served for ten and a half years, spending seven of them at RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk. When the time came to leave the military, I decided to stay in England, getting a job as a train troubleshooter at Alstom (formerly Bombardier) and I moved up the ranks there. After seven years at Alstom, I decided to move back to Suffolk, and since Greater Anglia is nearby, it was a natural fit.

I have two main roles at GA. I am firstly the Senior Commercial Manager for GA's North fleet, where I am responsible for managing the contracts and projects, negotiating deals, and running the strategy for future maintenance contracts.

My other role is Joint Project Manager, for which I represent the rolling stock company Rock Rail and GA. I manage the procurement of the trains for the Manufacture and Supply Agreements (MSA), and more recently I am managing Fleet North renationalisation activities.

I enjoy getting involved with a lot of different projects beyond my roles. I conducted a business case for an automated visual inspection system (AVIS) for remote condition monitoring, and I did some consulting work for TUK London Bus where I developed and am helping to implement a procurement strategy which will net substantial savings.

On top of this, I am a father, and I am perusing my MBA through an apprenticeship with Open University. So, I am very busy!

How have you found working for the UK private sector and GA following your time in the US armed forces?

America is not somewhere that I particularly relate to anymore. I have not lived there since President G. W. Bush’s administration, so it is all so far removed!

I moved to the UK when I was 21, and have spent my entire adult life here. During my time in the military I worked in extremely harsh conditions for long hours. It would not be uncommon to work 90-hour weeks in the pouring rain or freezing cold, and so my time there was hard. The constant postings also meant that I would be away from my family for months on end, which was especially difficult as I was deployed just after my daughter was born. During that year I was only home for about two weeks total.

Now, working in England, I appreciated the workers' rights and job security. Greater Anglia is the best employer I have ever worked for. GA are funding my MBA apprenticeship, and my immediate management provides me with professional support and lots of opportunities to grow and learn. One thing that is so different from the military is the amount of quality feedback I get, which lets me know how I can improve as well as what I am doing well.

What does an engineer do? How have you seen the role of engineers within transport change over your career? Are there any misconceptions about the job?

One thing that people may not realise is that in the UK, being an engineer encompasses many roles. It includes everyone from a fitter who might specifically change brake pads all the way up to chief engineer at a major manufacturing company.

I think the biggest difference I have seen over my career is the move from an analogue to a digital fleet, as technology has improved. Before, you could pretty much fix anything with a spanner, whereas now vehicles are very software and data driven.

One impact of this change is that the on-site staff are constantly having to challenge themselves with complex issues, sometimes requiring support from the wider organisation. When complex issues arise, it can be difficult to troubleshoot and pinpoint what the issue is. However, the other side of that coin is that the units are more reliable as a result of the technology and when systemic issue are found, we can work quickly with our suppliers to get a fix in place.

How have you found your transition from military aviation to domestic rail?

When you consider the concepts and principles of engineering, they translate quite well moving from Air to Rail and even to Busses. The main difference I have found is the varied safety considerations. Air is understandably very process and safety driven as the consequences can be dire, so once I learned the different safety considerations, such as PTS and moving safely around a working depot, things fell into place quite quickly.

What sustainability initiatives have you been involved with at GA?

GA takes great pride and interest in our sustainability endeavours. We have a sustainability strategy, set at the director level, and we feed that into our activity-based planning.

A few years ago, I was directly involved in implementing automated changeover in our trains. This added a logic within the fleet that enable drivers to switch from electric to diesel traction on the move, meaning they didn’t have to do this switch at the preceding station where this was required. As a result, we use less diesel and more electric, which is far more sustainable.

In the future, we are looking to explore battery technology in our trains to reduce fuel consumption like a hybrid car. We need the technology to mature first, but we are constantly on the look-out for new ways to make our railway more sustainable.

What qualities do you believe are essential for thriving in a fast-paced and evolving environment like the rail industry?

One of the most important qualities is conscientiousness, recognising that we are all helping to provide a public service.

We have an important job. The reality is trains are the sole mode of transportation for many people to get to and from work, school or wherever they need to go. This stimulates economic activity in the region. It gives people freedom; my wife, for example, doesn't drive, so being able to use the railway is essential to her day-to-day.

The rail industry is very receptive to highly motivated, intelligent people who can help contribute both towards a good work environment and to better transport for all. We want people who are excited be here and are bought into what we are trying to do.

What are some of the biggest lessons you’ve learned whilst at GA? Can you share a piece of advice or a lesson you learned that you carry with you in your career?

Having worked my way all the way up from apprentice to manager, my one piece of advice is to work as hard as you're willing to work with no expectation of reward, and opportunities will afford themselves to you. I would urge everyone to appreciate the fruits of your labour, and try to get satisfaction out of doing a good job. Keep working hard and opportunities often come. This is something the air force taught me.

For the transport sector specifically, it is essential to always remember that safety is our number one priority. Keep safety in mind throughout your career, especially as an engineer.

What advice would you give to engineers considering a career in the transport industry?

Apply! If you are an engineer, if you have a desire to be an apprentice, or if you want to develop yourself, then I think the railway is a great place. I and so many others have developed so much through being in this industry, and we are always looking for talented, driven new people.

One thing to remember is that once you join, you are likely in a job for life. Like many others, I fell into the railway, and now I can't see myself ever leaving it. It is a great atmosphere, is well paid, and I think a lot of the people - especially engineers - really believe in what they're doing.

Spotlight Series: Meet Adam Ferguson

Spotlight Series: Meet Melissa Clarke

For our latest Spotlight piece, we interviewed Melissa Clarke, a Train

Tell us about your journey to become a train driver. What inspired you to pursue this career path?

My biggest inspiration is definitely my dad. He was on the railway for 40 years. Throughout my childhood it felt like I was already immersed within the transport industry. He would take me out on the train, on buses, or really anything transport-related, which shaped my interests as I was growing up.

When I left school, however, I never initially thought about joining the railway as a career. The railway continues to be male dominated, and I could not see where I would fit in. I went to university to study computer science instead, but then I realised that I wanted to follow in my dad’s footsteps and chase what really interested me. I ultimately left computer science and applied for the London Underground.

It took a few rounds of applying to different rail companies before I was hired by c2c as a train dispatcher. Far from being disheartened throughout this process, each rejection made me realise I wanted this more, and my confidence grew rather than got knocked.

After working at c2c for about 2 years, I had my two children. When I went back after maternity leave, I was really committed to making my home and work life function together. This propelled me to start my mainline training, and in 2022 I was confirmed as a train driver. I joined EMR as a driver in 2024, and am proud that I can say I am in a job I love whilst being a present mum.

Could you tell us about your Instagram account @thattraindrivermum?

Melissa’s viral instagram post

I started it as more of a personal record of my time in the industry, as something to look back on. I would often post about being a woman in the industry, even just for me, as it was something that isn’t often publicised. About two years ago I started posting more about train driving, and I picked up a following. One video of my kids waving at me whilst I was driving the train ended up getting over 400,000 views, which was crazy, and what really jumpstarted my growth.

As the account has grown, I have tried to showcase that the railway absolutely can be a place for working mums to have a brilliant career. I now get a lot of messages from people asking for tips on how to get into the industry. I have lot of mums asking how I manage work life and home life. It has been amazing.

I've been stopped a couple of times at train stations as well, which has been surreal. People have tapped me on the shoulder and asked if I am who I am. Finding the railway community on Twitter and on Instagram has been great, and it has been lovely to interact with a whole group of people who also share the same interests.

Are there any moments you have shared on your social media that you have been particularly proud of?

The moment that stands out the most is when my wedding went viral on TikTok because it was train themed. My husband and I met on the railway. We both wanted to celebrate our love of trains and have a really unique, memorable day for us both. It was also a tribute to my dad who spent his career on the underground and who sadly passed away before we got married.

Our wedding cake had a train track around it, and we had little figures of me and my husband wearing hi-vis over our wedding suit and wedding dress. Our invitations were on a tube map, our drink tokens were Oyster cards, and the welcome boards to our wedding looked like service information boards on the tube.

We wanted to show our personalities and have a wedding that stood out, and I was so happy with how it all turned out. The weirdest thing of all was when I checked the news one day, and we were the top trending story! It was posted in the Metro, and Okay Magazine did a feature on it as well. It was an unbelievable experience, and it was amazing that there were so many people who loved what we did.

What do you like about your job, and what are some aspects of it that people might not know about?

I love that my office doesn't stay in one place. I really enjoy that I get to travel across the country as my workday.

I could leave London in the sunshine, for example, and by the time I get to my destination it could be snowing. It was particularly amazing on my previous route when I went down by the coast and would see the sunrise and sunset over the water. I don't see train driving as a job - I see it as a hobby that fills my day, and I get paid for it. I feel very lucky to be in this position.

The training is rigorous, but essential. We spend at least 3 months in the classroom learning all the rules and regulations of the job before we even learn how to drive the train. Once we can drive the train, we then need to learn our complete route and each station along it. My route, for example, is 160 miles long, which took three months to get to grips with.

We are aware that you were involved in an incident whilst you were training. Could you talk to us about what happened, and how this has impacted you going forward?

One day during my training, when my instructor was driving the train, a person sadly stepped out in front of our train and took their own life. It is something that we in the industry are all aware could happen, but it is not something that you can prepare for.

That moment taught me a lot about both my own mental health, and the mental health of others. It really made me think about what was going on in that person’s life that they got to such a place that they felt that there was no other way out.

Throughout the incident, EMR was really supportive. Our employer gave us the time we needed to recover and checked on us a few times a week. We were also offered counselling.

Since then, I have gone out of my way to do more for people who need help. Even if it's not directly to do with mental health, my husband and I regularly donate to foodbanks to support those who are less fortunate than us. After the incident, I have prioritised giving back.

What qualities do you think are important to thrive in the rail industry? Is there anything you have learnt over your time to help you succeed?

One of the most important qualities is the ability to keep calm under pressure. It is an industry in which no day is the same, but this means that you are bound to face situations where something has gone wrong, and you need to be okay with that. When something is not going to plan, you need to remember to just take a moment to think about what to do before you act.

Being organised and taking the time to prepare for the day is one of the key things that has helped me navigate the industry, and deal with some of the stresses that might come my way. There are a lot of procedures and rules that help you know what to do in different situations, so being able to follow these is not only important but helps you deal with the changing environment. In my day to day, being able to communicate well has also been important in these situations. I think as I have gone through different roles in my career, embracing the constant change has just become part of me.

With each challenge I have faced, I have got a little bit stronger. When I first started on the platforms and things would go wrong, I would naturally become more anxious. By putting myself out of my comfort zone, I have grown to be able to handle whatever the industry throws at me.

Is there any advice that you'd give to someone thinking about joining the rail industry? Is there anything you would say to women in particular?

IFor anyone who's looking to join the industry, I would go for it! It is one big family where everyone is so supportive of each other.

Another thing I would say is if you do not manage to get in first time of applying, keep trying! I have learned from every time I've been rejected, and since I knew I wanted to have this career I just kept working to get here. Being in the rail industry is definitely a job for life, and the work is so enjoyable, so try to not get disheartened when you are looking to break in.

For women, do not see the gender imbalance in the workforce as a barrier. We need more women on the railway!

When I joined c2c in, 2014, I was the only female dispatcher on the platforms. When I left, we were probably in double figures, but it was still under 20% of drivers. Now, at EMR, 43% of the drivers on the mainline are women.

While it is definitely better than it was, the industry is still male dominated. There is room for so many more women to join, especially mums. I want other mums to know that you can have responsibilities both in your home life and your work life, and that though sometimes it can be tough, to not let yourself feel limited.

What type of advice do you give to mothers who are looking into the career?

Because my husband is also a train driver, we manage to work alternate shifts, which means that one of us is always around for our kids. We are very lucky to be in this position, so I would say that especially when starting out it is often important to have a good support network, as some of the training can be quite intense.

I wouldn't let shift work put anyone off, however. A lot of rail operators are very accommodating. Some Transport UK operators even have targeted advertising campaigns that are geared toward recruiting women drivers and mums into part time roles.

I actually see my kids more than I would if I worked a 9 to 5, as I can often be there for school drop-off or pickup. If any mums are anxious that a career in the rail industry could mean sacrificing their time as a mother, I want to reassure them that they can do both!

You can find Melissa on Instagram, TikTok, and Threads via the handle @thattraindrivermum, and on X via @traindrivermum.

Spotlight Series: Meet Melissa Clarke

Spotlight Series: Meet Jessie Hinds-Taylor

For our latest Spotlight piece, we interviewed Jessie Hinds-Taylor, a

Could you tell us about your journey to become a train conductor and what inspired you to take that career path?

My dad has worked in the railway industry since I was a kid, and I grew up watching him rise through the ranks. Seeing him there made me want to follow in his footsteps.

I studied public services in college, so when a job came up at WMT, my dad encouraged me to apply. Out of all the public sectors, I was always the most interested in working within the railway. Joining WMT was a natural fit, and I’ve been incredibly grateful for the way my career has unfolded since then.

You were recently presented with a Life Saver award. Can you tell us about that experience?

While I was ticketing, a man stepped out onto the tracks in front of the train I was on. Thankfully, the train was going slow enough for the driver to make an emergency stop, and after the driver has phoned the signal for assistance, I jumped out of the train to try and help the individual.

I managed to get the man, who was very distressed, onto the train, and I sat with him whilst we got moving again. As we started, he attempted to harm himself further, and I had to restrain him and shout to the driver, who stopped the train again. We managed to pull into the next station, where British Transport Police met us to help the man to safety.

When I got off the train, I was pretty shaken, and luckily, my godfather was working at the station to support me. The experience really opened my eyes to how vulnerable people can be, and I want to speak about my experience to shine a light on these situations. I’m very glad that I was able to help that man. Every day, you meet different people, and you do not know what that person is going through.

Did you feel supported by WMT after the incident?

Yes, I really did. I took some time off after the incident, and WMT were extremely supportive. Not only did they give me the time I needed, but they also offered counselling and constantly checked in with me to make sure I was OK.

My colleagues were also a great help. Talking through my experience and feelings after the event with them made it easier. I think those of us who have gone through something similar feel well looked after both by WMT and by each other.

Of course, this experience is an extreme example of the stresses that sometimes come with the job. But I feel that WMT is always there to protect us in situations such as this, and the management always asks what they can do to support you.

What do you enjoy most about working as a train conductor?

The community. It feels like we are all part of something together, and nobody is left out. Everybody wants to make you feel at home, and people are constantly having a laugh with each other.

It is also a very supportive environment for someone who is just starting out. Although I knew the industry a little bit because of my dad, anyone who joins is always welcomed, no matter their background. People are quick to strike up conversations with you, and everyone’s willingness to simply ask how your day has been makes such a difference to someone at the beginning. The whole atmosphere at work is so nice, I would not change anything!

What qualities do you think are important to thrive as a conductor in the rail industry, and are there any lessons you have taken forward in your career?

Just be who you are. There is so much unpredictability in the industry, especially as a conductor, so being yourself is important for dealing with whatever comes your way.

You also need to be open to other people, and ready to talk to whoever. A lot of the work is about being aware of whether a passenger wants a conversation and then having the flexibility to be able to accommodate that. This certainly comes with its challenges at times, but so often having a conversation with a passenger really brightens up your day.

One lesson that I try to carry forward is the power of smiling while working. If you are smiling, people are more likely to talk, and it makes the whole day so much more positive for both you and the passengers.

For example, I had a hen party on the train a few weeks ago, and the bride asked me to play a song over the PA. It sounded fun, so of course I said yes! I played it, and the whole train was up singing along to the song – it is in those moments that being open and willing to have a conversation pays off so much and makes everyone’s day.

How have you seen the railway industry change over your lifetime?

The biggest difference I have seen is how many women now work on the railway. I am proud to be one of the youngest ever women to sign a contract at WMT, and there were two other female staff who joined around the same time. I don’t think this would have been the case a few decades ago. A few generations above me at WMT, there are only around four or five women total, but now more younger women are thinking about a career in the railways. I feel that what might once have been an older, male-dominated industry has opened its doors to the next generation of women.

I also think there has been a big change in talking more about workplace mental health, which is very positive. Although I still feel like these things should be talked about more, my dad’s generation did not discuss mental health at all, even following similar situations to the one that I did. The fact that I feel comfortable talking about some of the challenges that people might face speaks to the progress we as an industry have made, and I hope this continues.

Is there one piece of advice you would give to someone thinking about working in the rail industry?

It's never what you think it's going to be, but that is what makes you fall in love with it. Every day is different; you never know what to expect. I always knew that working a 9 to 5 office job was not going to be for me, and I needed to be in an environment that is constantly changing. Working on the railway, you certainly are never bored! I feel like I have found the perfect place for me, to be able to enjoy going into work and knowing that every day is a new challenge I never thought I would have to face

To find out more about the story of Jessie’s Life Saver award, please see this press release.

Spotlight Series: Meet Jessie Hinds-Taylor

Spotlight Series: Meet Jermaine Cairns

For our latest Spotlight piece, we interviewed Jermaine Cairns, a Customer

What does your role as a Customer Relations Insights Manager for Greater Anglia involve?

My role is split into two main parts. The first part of my role focuses on ad hoc project work, specifically analysing trends in customer contact and identifying any changes. This includes investigating why these changes occur and providing deeper insight into specific situations, such as why an issue might have arisen at a particular station.

Secondly, I help produce the reports that are used internally and sent to the Department of Transport each period. These contain information about complaints, any increases or decreases in complaint numbers, and the top reasons for people contacting us.

I also handle requests from internal stakeholders, including teams like on-board catering, and conduct reviews following service disruptions to determine the number of customers affected.

My work adds a deeper understanding of the data that we collect at Greater Anglia. If we just put numbers in boxes, we lose out on the narrative of ‘why’ something happened at a certain station or route. By using the data available and understanding it, we can proactively improve the journeys of people travelling with us.

What motivated you to transition from working in logistics and retail at Amazon to the rail industry?

I have always been interested in the railways and I loved trains as a kid. I was at Amazon for 3 years and really enjoyed the use of data there, so when the opportunity to combine data analytics with the rail industry to help improve customer experiences came up, it was one that I knew I had to take advantage of.

What qualities do you believe are essential for thriving in the rail industry?

The rail industry is a fast-paced and constantly evolving environment, and so my ability to complete tasks in a timely manner and to a good standard has been important for my role at Greater Anglia.

I also believe the ability to interpret tasks is vital for a role like mine. As a data analyst, I need to interpret and understand the specific needs of stakeholders, often identifying unspoken requirements. This ability to spot patterns, ask the right questions, and dive deeper into complex issues ensures that questions are addressed and that effective solutions are found.

What are some of the biggest lessons you’ve learned in your first nine months at GA, and how do you envision your career developing in the transport industry?

It has been great coming into a new role and being able to showcase the value I can bring.

A key project I’ve worked on involved assessing customers' perceptions of value for money. This examined how consumers view various aspects of the GA train service, such as the on-board facilities. I also had the opportunity to present my findings at a monthly board meeting. As Greater Anglia is still relatively new to leveraging data in this way, it’s been rewarding to help put these insights into practice.

In the future, I would like to increase the use of data at GA and maybe one day head up an analytics department. My goal is to create an environment where teams can be more self-sufficient by accessing and utilising data more effectively, while also building a data portfolio to inform decision-making across the business.

You’re currently embarking on a data apprenticeship. Could you explain how this came about, what specific skills or insights you are hoping to gain from this experience, and how you plan to apply them in your current role?

The apprenticeship is funded by Greater Anglia and was organised by the Data and Analytics Manager to formalise our understanding of data, particularly since many of us in the team are self-taught.

It provides both theory and practical skills, with exposure to best practices across different industries.

Balancing work and education has been challenging at times, but it’s been valuable to apply what I've learned directly to my role. For example, I created a dashboard when I first started, but in one of my modules, I learned about the importance of using specific colours, which has opened my eyes to a new way of displaying data effectively.

What do you see as some of the major challenges currently facing the rail industry, and how do you think your role can help address these?

Data analytics is still quite new to the industry and sometimes it can be difficult to explain its importance to those who have been in the industry for a very long time.

People have been receptive to data, but during my time at Greater Anglia, I’ve noticed how data is presented is vital. For example, simply reporting an increase in complaints might not resonate with those across the business, but putting those figures into context helps them understand the implications better. My role involves showcasing these insights in a constructive manner, ensuring that the data is framed in a way that clearly communicates its relevance and impact.

Can you share a piece of advice or a lesson you learned you carry with you in your career? What advice would you give to someone considering a career in the transport industry?

Be open to embracing challenges. It's natural to feel apprehensive when asked to do something outside your comfort zone, but being able to embrace these challenges is the key to growth.

To those considering a career in this industry, be prepared to encounter a wide variety of situations, as no two days are the same. Working in rail means dealing with hundreds of thousands of people, which naturally presents its challenges. I would also say to take advantage of any opportunities to explore other areas within the industry. Gaining insights into different areas of the business allows you to better understand the larger picture, making you a better employee.

Spotlight Series: Meet Jermaine Cairns

Transport UK partners with UNESCO World Engineering Day 2025

Transport UK partners with UNESCO World Engineering Day 2025

Transport UK has been confirmed as a commercial partner to be featured in a 2025 campaign for UNESCO World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development.

This campaign will recognise the role of science and engineering in sustainable development, and Britain’s unrivalled rail heritage will be showcased in a short film highlighting Transport UK’s innovative sustainable transport solutions which reduce emissions and improve community safety.

The 12-month campaign will launch on World Engineering Day on 4th March 2025, a year marking the 80th anniversary of UNESCO and 10th anniversary of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

The Transport UK film explains how the company is helping to address SDG 11 - “Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.”

The film begins in Liverpool, a city at the heart of transport innovation. In 1904, it unveiled one of the world’s first electric railways laying the foundations for Mersey Travel’s 777 fleet - the first battery powered electric trains in the UK. Like with hybrid cars, when the trains break, they generate energy that gets cycled back into the network.

The film explores Transport UK’s innovations in sustainability, investing £10 million in green technology across its rail network. Martin Beable, Managing Director at Greater Anglia (GA) and former New Trains and Fleet Director at Transport UK, explains how GA is well placed to operate the UK’s first hydrogen trains should the hydrogen feasibility study it is investing in alongside Eversholt Rail and Arup prove successful.

Alan Pilbeam, Chief Commercial Officer at Transport UK, who features in the film said:

“Transport UK is punching well above its weight when it comes to improving passenger access to sustainable transport across the UK. Driving innovation with Greater Anglia (GA), we have introduced an entirely new fleet of bi-modal trains that are energy efficient. We’re installing these same trains with East Midlands Railway (EMR).

“In the West Midlands, we’re driving environmental progress through ambitious plans. In our WMTen manifesto, we have a target to reduce emissions down to 10 percent. Our plan for achieving this will save the taxpayer tens of millions - if not hundreds of millions - of pounds, in reduced infrastructure enhancement costs in comparison of what it would cost to fully electrify the line.”

The film also highlights the recent success of Transport UK London Bus, which represents 11 percent of the capital’s bus routes. Not only has the firm got one of the largest electric and hybrid fleets in the region, but it is also on schedule to be fully electrified well before the Mayor of London’s deadline of 2030.

All of Transport UK’s depots are now equipped with electric chargers to power the new fleet of buses. Transport UK is also in discussion with local authorities regarding how its charging facilities across London might be used to power blue light services across the city.

Sustainability is a key pillar of Transport UK’s social values charter. The group continues to expand its electrified fleets and sustainability initiatives across its train operating companies and London Bus, in line with - and in some cases ahead of - the Government’s net-zero decarbonisation timelines.

Transport UK is committed to reducing emissions whilst improving air quality, connectivity, and accessibility for the communities it serves as it continues to deliver further innovation for the communities it serves.

The film created for UNESCO World Engineering Day 2025 has been produced by the SJH Group, in partnership with Transport UK.

Tell us about your journey to become a bus driver - what inspired you to pursue this career path?

I grew up in Greece, where I spent 20 years working as a journalist in TV and print. When the economic crisis hit, the newspaper I worked for was forced to close. I wasn’t sure what to do next. I had a bus driving license 5 or 6 years before the newspaper’s closure, and I had always wanted to become a bus driver. However, there were not many opportunities available in Greece, so I began looking abroad.

A friend sent me a job advert at Transport UK London Bus, which was hiring bus drivers at that time. I was initially hesitant because I was 52 at the time and wondered if they would hire someone new to the industry later in their career. My friend assured me that age was not an issue and encouraged me to send my license and undergo a background check. After an interview, I accepted a role as a bus driver, and I moved to London in 2018.

What was the most challenging part of your journey?

Initially, adjusting to driving on the left side of the road was a daunting challenge. However, with time and the support of other drivers, I quickly adapted. Their care and help made me feel like part of a big family.

I also anticipated facing difficulties as a woman in a predominantly male profession, but I was pleasantly surprised by the warm reception and support from my colleagues. Many women have told me they see me as an inspiration, and I find it hard to express how meaningful that is.

What skills and attributes do you think are essential for someone to succeed as a bus driver?

A love for driving is crucial since this job can involve up to 10 hours behind the wheel. Patience is also important, as you’ll often face situations where you need to answer questions promptly and without frustration. It also goes without saying that there is a lot of traffic in London, so you must be prepared for delays and unexpected situations.

Understanding these aspects and being ready for them can greatly contribute to becoming a successful bus driver.

You are also a driver mentor. Can you tell us more about what that entails and what you do in that role?

I focus on supporting new drivers after they pass their tests and begin their on-the-road training. I assist them in learning the routes, handling bus controls and navigating their responsibilities. It's essential to help them remember the various buttons and switches on the bus. The first day that you start driving your route can be daunting, so I make a point of being present to ease them into their new roles.

You are involved in volunteering outside of work. Can you expand on that and why you do it?

About two years ago, I helped create a small group focused on health and wellbeing, where we meet with HR to discuss various issues. We’ve addressed topics like prostate cancer, which led to increased awareness among drivers about the importance of health checks. Additionally, I volunteer to assist with elderly patients at Maudsley Hospital, which helps me contribute and give back to a community that has given me so much. This has deepened my understanding of the importance of mental health support, something I take back with me into my professional life.

Can you share a piece of advice or a lesson you learned you carry with you in your career?

One memorable piece of advice from a trainer named Alyene is to “expect the unexpected.” You never know what you might encounter on the road or if a passenger might unexpectedly stand up on the bus. Constant vigilance, especially when driving in a busy city like London, is essential for safety. This lesson has stayed with me throughout my career and continues to guide me in my daily work.

Spotlight Series: Meet Zoi Dendrami

Transport UK Group operators honoured at National Rail Awards

Transport UK’s train operating companies took home five National Rail

Transport UK’s train operating companies (TOC) took home five National Rail Awards following a ceremony last Thursday, September 12. Greater Anglia was awarded the honour of the night, Passenger Operator of the Year, for its exceptional customer service, driven by its trains arriving within three minutes of their scheduled arrival over 94% of the time.

All four Transport UK TOCs were nominated across multiple categories. They came away with five wins between them, including:

·       Greater Anglia for Passenger Operator of the Year;

·       Greater Anglia for Fleet Achievement of The Year for ‘fleet transformation’;

·       East Midlands Railway for Customer Service Excellence for ‘Skegness summer service’;

· Greater Anglia for Large Station of the Year for their operations at Cambridge station; and,

· West Midlands Trains for Medium Station of the Year for their services at University (Birmingham) station.

TUK operators have also been honoured with three ‘highly commended’ nominations, including:

·       Greater Anglia for Customer Service Excellence for We're All Ears campaign;

· Greater Anglia and Stadler for Customer Service Excellence for Class 745/755 trains; and,

· East Midlands Railway for Medium Station of the Year for their services at Market Harborough.

The awards, organised by RAIL, recognise and reward people, companies, government entities and initiatives which demonstrate innovation and excellence across the UK’s rail sector. They showcase how both public and private players are key to providing an excellent service for passengers. These awards were held following the third reading of the Passenger Railway Services (Public Ownership) Bill by Parliament and ahead of the first reading in the House of Lords, which is scheduled for October 7th.

Dominic Booth, Chief Operating Officer of Transport UK, commented:

“This evening showcased the incredible services being delivered across the country. Our dedicated employees, partners, and stakeholders who have made our first year as Transport UK a resounding success have our full gratitude. Two of the country’s best performing operators, Greater Anglia and West Midlands Trains, have been awarded some of the highest accolades at the National Rail Awards and that is truly impressive.

“With nationalisation on the horizon for 2027, Transport UK is keen to play a full role in supporting the Government with its transition. We agree there is an urgent need to improve standards across the UK’s rail sector and welcome the Secretary of State’s intention to deal quickly with the problems rail passengers face. We are hopeful that when the Passenger Railway Services (Public Ownership) Bill becomes law this autumn, the Government will exercise its discretion to target areas and communities that are affected by the worst performing operators, some of which are already under remedial measures. By using their discretion, rather than a timetable dictated by when contracts expire, the Government will ensure the worst affected passengers receive the urgent support they need first.”

The report highlights how TUK is on schedule to complete Britain’s most ambitious fleet renewal by the end of 2025 – a £2.5 billion innovation programme to significantly reduce TUK’s carbon footprint. All four of Transport UK’s Train Operating Companies (TOCs) are modernising with 75% of the new trains already in service. The remainder are set to be delivered by the end of next year. It also notes that 70% of the TUK London Bus (TUKLB) fleet has been converted to hybrid or electric power.

West Midlands Trains (WMT) is in the midst of a £1 billion investment programme to enhance the current fleet of 224 trains with 110 new state-of-the-art trains. WMT is also bolstering its network infrastructure and train depots with a multi-million-pounds investment.

East Midlands Railway has completed a £35 million infrastructure improvement project to prepare the Etches Park depot for the arrival of 165 new Class 810 bi-mode carriages in 2025.

Merseyrail has rolled out the UK’s first battery-operated trains on behalf of Liverpool’s Mayor in the last year. Transport UK supported Merseytravel with the deployment of the new Class 777 fleet of mainline battery-powered trains. These vehicles lead the industry in comfort, passenger amenities and operational performance, facilitating top-tier service for customers.

Greater Anglia (GA) just marked the fifth anniversary of its fleet transformation. The investment has helped it become the best performing operator in the UK with an annual punctuality of 94.3%. Since 2020, GA has also reduced 39% of its carbon emissions.

Transport UK London Bus now represents 11 percent of the London bus route and has one of the largest electric fleets in London. TUKLB is leading the industry with 12% year-on-year carbon reduction. This has been driven by its bus and depot electrification programme. The Year in Review report notes that over the coming years, Transport UK plans to continue investing in and growing its fleet of electric buses until net-zero carbon is achieved.

The Year in Review highlights how Transport UK delivered a premium of £72 million to the Treasury in FY23 and is forecast to deliver a further £100 million this year, due in large part to the success of the Greater Anglia network which is steadily turning a profit for the government.

Dominic Booth, CEO of Transport UK, commented:

“Reflecting on the first year of Transport UK’s success, we are incredibly proud of all that the team has achieved. We are driving forward the green energy revolution to improve public transport.

“Our dedicated team of industry experts has unparalleled skill and experience in the sector. This will be crucial to shaping integrated public transport in the years to come as we continue our journey to create a sustainable, efficient and inclusive transport network.”

Tell us about your journey to becoming a train driver - what inspired you to pursue this career path?

I was brought up around railways. It runs in the family - my dad became a train driver in 1993, first in freight and then in passenger railways. From a very young age, I knew I wanted to drive trains – I have had my heart set on it for about 20 years!

A few weeks before the pandemic hit in 2020, I began my first job on the railways at age 18 as a customer host. I worked there until earlier this year, when I started my training as a driver. I really enjoyed working as a customer host – it was a good way to get involved in the railway industry as a young person.

What was the most challenging part of your training to become a train driver?

We are given a lot of responsibility, which is great but requires us to memorise a large amount of information and then apply everything we have learned while driving the trains. Learning all the rules and procedures can be lengthy but is an essential part of the training.

The application process was also rigorous. You apply a year before starting, and there are multiple rounds of assessment, including essay questions, a computer-based test and a manager interview.

EMR was my first and only choice of operator where I wanted to work. It is very close to where I live and, of course, where my dad used to drive.

Can you describe a day in your role as an apprentice driver? What are some of your typical tasks and responsibilities?

The apprentice course is intense. It is a combination of practical driving and classroom study. The theory element starts with learning the rules, regulations of personal track safety and the EMR-specific policies. I currently take trains for test runs, accompanied by a mentor, around Derby station, in order to put what we have learned into practice. When the trains come out of service for the day, it is our responsibility to drive them from the station back to the depot.

What skills and attributes do you think are essential for someone to succeed as a train driver?

You need some resilience – you need to keep going and believe in yourself, even if you don’t think you’re doing that well. You also need to be able to absorb a lot of new information. Be prepared to spend six months learning it all!

How did it feel to have a special celebration to mark your qualification as an EMR apprentice driver in recognition of you following in your father’s footsteps?

It felt surreal – it was strange to see my face in the news, in Derbyshire Live and, of course, BBC News! It definitely made me proud as well.

Can you share a piece of advice or a lesson you learned from your father that you carry with you in your career?

My career is a career for life. It is important to recognise that and not take it for granted. If you love the job as much as my dad did and I do, that’s great. It is so important to do something you love (and ideally get paid for it if you can!).

What advice would you give to a young person considering a career as a train driver?

Do thorough background research to see if it is for you. If it is, you will love it!

Reflecting on your journey so far, what has been the most rewarding aspect of training as a driver at EMR?

It is a great team – everyone looks out for everyone. I started when I was 18 as a customer host. Starting from such a young age and then progressing through the company has been a great experience. It is incredibly satisfying to pass each stage of the course and see just how far you've come since you started – you definitely feel a big sense of achievement.

Is there anything that is particularly exciting to you about your career/future as a train driver?

I would love to follow my father’s footsteps and become a mainline driver.
